Embodying the very essence of the Mercedes-Benz brand – with a heritage that reaches back to 1886 and the invention of the world’s first motor car – S-Class has long been regarded as a forerunner for innovation that, over time, trickles down to other Mercedes-Benz models and out across the industry generally.

Said by Mercedes-Benz to have been ‘refined in every detail’, the new S-Class comes in a choice of seven models: three petrol, two diesel, and two plug-in electric models fitted with EQ hybrid technology.

Petrol models are a V8, S580 4MATIC and two six-cylinder variants (S500 4MATIC and S450 4MATIC). Two diesel models – powered by a six-cylinder engine already developed to meet future emissions regulations – are a S350d 4MATIC and S450d 4MATIC. Two plug-in electric models with EQ hybrid technology are a S580e 4MATIC and S 450e 4MATIC both of which link a 6-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor of 430 kW and 320 kW (with an electric-only range of circa 100kms). Prices relating to all models will vary according to customers’ specifications and choice of equipment.

Said by Patrick Howlett, National Sales Manager, Mercedes-Benz Ireland to be “a forerunner in terms of safety”, the S-Class promises owners “a sublime ride in all conditions thanks to its standard air suspension, intelligent ‘electrically adjusting’ damping, and effortless maneuverability”.

For occupants and other road users alike, state-of-the-art safety systems set a global standard. Impulse belt pretensioners and up to 15 airbags, including passenger knee bags, work alongside restraint and intelligent deployment systems to underscore the S-Class safety-for-all approach.

Controlling everything is a purpose-built ‘MB.OS operating system’ in which a supercomputer powers every domain, connecting all systems into one intelligent ecosystem. Keeping the S-Class ‘future-ready’, all is linked to the Mercedes-Benz ‘Intelligent Cloud’ through which over-the-air software updates can be received.

A head-turner in terms of its appearance, it comes adorned with a larger illuminated grille, and new twin-star lamps that deliver a high-resolution illumination field. For made-to-measure buyers there’s more than 150 exterior colours and over 400 interior colours from which to choose.

Amongst other innovations likely to feature in future E-Class and C-Class models are driving and parking assistance systems, extensive sensor technology, and powerful new computer architecture.

Rear-axle steering, intelligent damping for longer speed bumps, enhanced adaptive restraint system, first-class comfort, and elevated levels of wellbeing are amongst its comfort and safety offerings with innovations that include heated seat belts, digital vent control, and new electric air filtration.  Latest-generation MBUX, with standard ‘superscreen’, bring AI-based ‘Hey Mercedes’ assistance and Surround Navigation based on Google Maps.

Refined interior elegance with first-class comfort in every seat, the new S-Class can be viewed by corporate owners as a ‘boardroom on wheels’. Its first-class rear seating within a first-class rear compartment means the S-Class transforms into a fully connected workplace or quiet personal retreat, with MBUX remote controls and integrated video conferencing – aspects that Patrick Howlett says “keep S-Class in territory it has traditionally occupied: a league of its own”.
